Dealing with Feelings:
Raising Emotionally Healthy
Kids
Dear Parent and Educator,
I would like to thank you for introducing Max the Guard Dog
to your child. Let me tell you briefly how this book came about. In my
private practice, I work with children of all ages, as well as adults.
I have heard many parents express frustration because they lack the
knowledge, let alone the experience, to foster healthy self-esteem in
their children. Often they are confused about how to teach children
important life skills, such as communication, assertiveness,
self-discipline, openness, and-perhaps most important-how to help
their children handle emotions. This has always been a challenge in
therapy. Many studies have indicated the importance of being able to
understand ones feelings in order to deal with them in a constructive
way. Wouldn’t childhood be the best time to learn such important
skills?
The idea of writing about a dog was a natural. Our family was
blessed with a dog named Max. For nine years, Max was a source of
learning and inspiration for all of us. Unfortunately, Max recently
passed away; in a way, this book is a tribute to him. It is also a
tribute to all pets, because they are able to express so much love,
patience, persistence, and dedication…to name just a few of their
wonderful qualities.
Max the Guard Dog can help to engrain in children the
principles of healthy self-esteem, based fundamentally on their
ability to feel good about themselves. It also aims to teach them how
to identify and deal with their feelings. For parents, the book points
out the importance of fostering values-such as sharing, forgiveness,
kindness, gratitude, and staying safe-and expands on developing good
communication with their children.
I have used Max successfully with children of all ages, to
teach them the principles that are discussed in this guide. The
workbook provides parents and educators with a tool to expand on the
principles demonstrated in the story and to broaden the child’s
knowledge through questions and discussion.
I hope that your child enjoys reading about Max and that you will
make good use of this guide. I would be very interested in getting
your comments and hearing about your experiences applying the
principles presented in this book. I’d also like to hear about your
general experience with the important and challenging role of raising
children.
God bless you,
Dr. Bob Gottfried
